You can find all of my reviews at The Romantic Reader Blog. 100% dedicated to the reviews of lesbian romance novels.Soccer is a passion of mine. I have played most of my life, starting when I was just in the 1st grade. Combine that love with a Kate Christie book. Okay yeah, you have me interested. Even if soccer isn’t your passion, you should give this book a chance for one reason, the author.
Jamie Maxwell is a young high school aged soccer player. She has that single-minded focus of an elite athlete. Soccer, she lives for it, she will sacrifice everything else for the game. How many teenagers are that focused, not many? Combine that with a natural athletic prowess and you have that special combo that just might take you to the top of the game.
Emma Blakeley is exactly like Jamie in the sense that the game defines her. Emma is finishing up her senior year and has already committed to the storied women’s soccer program UNC. Emma sees a kinship in Jamie, where the sport they love supersedes everything else. What she also sees, when they randomly bump into each post-tournament is that Jamie radiates sadness. They bond almost instantly seeing a kinship of a fellow athlete but also drawing strength from one another. This instant connection will define the rest their year.
In the beginning, they are strictly friends, sharing their love of the beautiful game, waking up before the sun is up to catch a Premier League match, sharing stories of their day on the pitch. Soccer is the catalyst for more. They become to depend on each other. They become each other’s anchors as they deal with some pretty heavy stuff.
This story is jam-packed with drama. You have multiple life defining moments and the reactions and emotions of two young women. My heart ached for both Jamie and Emma, at times individually and simultaneously. To say these two are put through the gamut is an understatement. 2003-2004 will be a time that will forever define the course of these two lives.
Pretty heavy right! If this book was a stand alone, I would be wary to recommend this one. Not because of any flaw in the writing, because it is really good, but it also kind of hurts. While I read romance novels for so many reasons, let’s all face the cold hard truth, we want that happy ending. Good news is this is not a stand alone, but one of three books following the lives of soccer’s toughest duo. Training Ground is the backstory, vital to understanding how it all began. So you have to read it, and you’ll want to, but buy the second part with the first, and go right into it.

Training Ground Book One of Girls of Summer Volume 1 Kate Christie 9780985367732 Books Reviews
Jamie in California and stays on the west coast, Emma in Seattle who is going to UNC both are soccer players. The two young ladies quickly becomes friends. Complications later and a growing distance between them endangers their relationship. First book shows two people striving to remain friends. Interesting story, enjoy.
An interesting story about soccer, coming out, and other weighty issues - I appreciate the author's honest and sensitive handling of some very difficult issues (e.g., sexual violence), and struggles with identity overall. And as a soccer lover, I really appreciated all the details about competitive soccer (ODP, college soccer, etc) - great to have a writer who really knows the game and can write for girls (and boys) who love the sport! It's a bit overwritten and the pace a bit slow, but it mostly kept me interested.
This is the first book in a series, which leaves me to believe that the rest of the books are going yo be equally riveting! I finished reading the book and found myself reading exerts of the story over and over. That is how poignant and thought provoking this story was. It will be interesting on how Jaime and Emma's story unfold in the upcoming book in the fall. Well done!
First This is a sweet start to a " back story" on what a winding road there is in getting to an international stage in women's soccer. It's fiction, but the author clearly knows the inner workings of girls soccer and development of kids. If you don't know soccer much, (and I don't) pay attention you will learn a lot. Second it is an awesome telling of the complicated impact of violence on a young girl. The relationship that develops between the two girls is a little unbelievable at the start. But if you let go it sets up an interesting insight into how vulnerable and broken people can be helped and become stronger.
This one tugs at the heart all the way through, and makes you want the sequel right quick! Nice job.
I wish I could give this more than five stars. Although listed under lesbian romance, you don't have to be a lesbian or a soccer fan to love this book. Ms. Christie has created two of the most interesting and compelling characters I have had the pleasure to discover. Jamie and Emma's relationship is fraught with hazards and stumbling blocks of any relationship miscommunication, lack of communication and that old relationship killer wrong assumptions about another's intentions and motives. Ms. Christie's writing is exquisite and grabs your interest from the very fist page. I can't say enough good about this book except that I paused after the second chapter an bought the second book, Game Time, because I simply had to see what happens to Jamie and Emma. Do yourself a favor and discover this superbly written romance between two of the most engaging and interesting characters you'll ever meet.
O M G! I cannot believe it! This book had me riveted on my seat! I hate you! (I'm kidding, I love you and your writting!) This kept me awake at night as I tried to finish it as fast as I could! I cannot believe it! You write so well! Your text convays feelings in such a powerful way.
This as you understand isn't very much of a review. You may freely call me biased as I'm totally sold with the quality of this work. This is a wonderful romance between two teenage girls which tackles very sensitive issues such as friendship, long distance relationships, physical abuse and loss of a loved one. This author manages to weave a wonderfully romantic story while dealing with some really depressing situations which affect the main protagonists. Since I detest spoilers I will only say this if you are looking for a quick and clean happily ever after story do not read this. Even I had momments where I didn't want to flip my kindle reader to turn the page, afraid of what hearthache lay ahead.
Once more my most heartiest congratulations to the writer. Well done!
